For web applications is one of the more well-known commercial products is Siteminder, which provides single-signon facilities. A usual web application implementation stores the more sensitive personal data inside the Siteminder application, and less sensitive can be stored in a normal database. If it is not web application, I would say a Microsoft Access database will do the trick better than an Excel sheet. Apart from being an ordinary database, you can create a nice graphical interface to enter / edit / delete customer data (a socalled 'Form'), as well as integrate with Microsoft Word (for instance if you want to generate letters with customer's name, but otherwise similar).
