This is the first time in Olympic history that the Olympic flame passed through the Latin American city.

Triple Olympic medal winner Carlos Espinola holds the torch.

In the ceremony which kicked off the torch relay at Lola Mora amphitheatre in the port district, mayor Mauricio Macri said he was proud that Buenos Aires being selected as "the Latin American representatives" in the Olympic torch relay.

The mayor said that "it is a great joy to be the hosts of a party like the one is taking place today, it is a proud to be the Latin American representatives" in Olympic torch relay.

"The Olympic Games is a moment of brotherhood, of life time sharing, that feed us and made us better as society. We hope to beat the high of the expectations", the mayor said.

The mayor then handed the torch to the first runner, triple Olympic medal winner Carlos "Camau" Espinola who said afterwards that he was hornored to be the first torchbearer.

The 36-year-old sailor, who had won two silver and one bronze medals at previous Olympic Games, said he would try to fulfill his "golden dream" at the Beijing Olympic Games.

80 torchbearers took part in the relay through Buenos Aires, among them are field hockey player Vanina Oneto, cyclist Juan Curuchet, swimmer Georgina Bardach, waterskier Jorge Renosto and other sportsmen and former sportsmen.

Large crowds lined the relay route to mark the historic moment of the city and the torch relay turned out to be a "festive event" as promised by Julio Cassanello, president of the Argentine Olympic Committee (COA).

Cassanello, who is in Beijing to attend the 16th conference of national and regional Olympic committees, said on Thursday "we will make the torch relay a festive event for all in Buenos Aires and in Argentina".

Eighth stop of global torch relay concludes in Tanzania

               Updated:2008-04-14
UN Under-Secretary-General and Executive Director of UN-HABITAT Anna Tibaijuka lights the flame cauldron.

(DAR ES SALAAM, April 13) -- The former capital of Tanzania, Dar es Salaam, hosted a successful torch relay on April 13, supported by thousands of fans who crowded the streets to welcome the sacred flame.

Since the torch relay tradition began in 1936, this is the first time that an eastern African country has hosted the sacred flame. In this year's torch relay, Tanzania is the only African country on the worldwide route.

On Sunday, Dar es Salaam's clouds were heavy with water; sure enough, rain drops pounded down on the streets of the city prior to the start of the relay. Intermittent drizzle continued after the first torchbearer, Tanzanian Minister of State for Union Affairs in Vice President's Office Mohamed Seif Khatib successfully passed the torch.

From the Dar es Salaam railway station of the TAZARA to the Tanzanian National Stadium, 80 torchbearers traveled the five-kilometer route without any major incidents.

UN Under-Secretary-General and Executive Director of UN-HABITAT Anna Tibaijuka delivered the sacred flame to its final destination in Africa, the Tanzanian National Stadium, where Liu Jingmin, Vice-Mayor of Beijing and Executive Vice-President of the Beijing Organizing Committee for the Games of the XXIX Olympiad (BOCOG) gave a speech describing the friendship between China and Tanzania.

On Sunday evening, the flame will take off for destination number nine on the global relay route, Muscat, Oman.

Olympic flame back to Asia in Muscat relay

MUSCAT, April 14 (Xinhua) -- The Olympic flame wrapped up its journey in Europe, America, and Africa, going back to Asia with a relay on Monday in the Omani capital of Muscat, the only stop in the Arab world.

The city's relay started from Al Bustan, six kilometers east of Muscat, where the duplicate of an ancient Suhar sailing boat is located.

The antique Suhar boat from which the replica is copied visited Guangzhou, China, about 1,000 years ago. This piece of history indicates a long connection and friendship between the two countries.

"The renewed Suhar visited Guangzhou, a southern city of China, in the 80s of the last century. It's a repeat of an ancient pioneering navigation and it's a symbol marking the long friendship between the two countries," said Fatik Bin Fahar, undersecretary of the Ministry of Heritage & Culture, who was the second torchbearer in the Muscat relay..

Hundreds of pupils chanted "China, China" through Sidab Street as a special way of greeting the Olympic flame.

The relay's 20 kilometer journey took the sacred flame through Sidab Harbor, Al Alam Palace, Muscat Gate Museum, and Al Mina Rings before reaching the final celebration site, Al Qurm Natural Park.

The first torchbearer was Sayyid Shihab bin Tareq al Said, advisor and cousin of Omani Sultan Qaboos bin Said, and former president of the Oman Football Association.

The honor of lighting the cauldron was given to Macki Habib, vice president of the Oman Olympic Committee.

Rahma Marhoon, an athlete for the Beijing Paralympics, was the only disabled torchbearer. "I don't know much about China in the past, but now I get a chance to visit China," said Marhoon.

"It's a good chance to learn about China. I believe the Beijing Olympic Games will be a great success. Each Olympic Games progresses from the last one, so it's the same for the Beijing Games."

When asked about the protests in London and Paris, Marhoon joked that she had to hold her torch firmly. "It's quite safe here, I don't need to worry about that," she said.

Muscat is the capital and largest city of the Sultanate of Oman.. The governorate of Muscat has an estimated population of 600,000. The greater metropolitan area of Muscat, also known locally as the "Capital Area," currently covers an area of approximately 1,500 square kilometers.

In general, Muscat presents a relatively homogeneous appearance of low (rarely more than five storey), generally white buildings, with residential, government, and commercial architecture frequently recalling, at least by allusion, historic regional styles. For a city at the edge of the Arabian peninsula and in Oman's sometimes fierce climate, Muscat is remarkably green, with tree-lined main streets linking the various districts, several sizable public parks, and grass, shrubs, and flowers decorating many traffic circles and other public areas.
