Brazil has a complicated duty and tax system with a large number of duties and taxes. Import duties are on average 15 % and reach a maximum of 36%. Duties according to value are levied on the CIF value of the product. The import value of the goods is calculated by applying a special foreign exchange rate to the CIF value. The classification of products to determine import taxes is based on the Brussels nomenclature. The table below shows an example of expenses added to an imported product, thus calculating landed cost in Brazil. The example can only be regarded as an illustration of the principles since duties and taxes differ depending on the type of product.
