Indian software industry problem

Changing social and economic scene impacts Indian software industry-is it protectionism?
Make no mistake, the Indian software industry is healthy. In the year ending in March, Indian software exports grew nearly 30 percent to nearly $10 billion. That figure is below the ???usual??? 50 percent growth rate but it??s still strong.

However, there is increasing apprehension in the Indian software industry that Indian workers may be encountering protectionism as developed countries seek to keep jobs for their own people in the midst of difficult economic times.

The protectionism is quite noticeable in the United States which is still scared to death of terrorism and has had a severe economic slowdown. The US eats up more than 60 percent of India??s $10 billion software and service exports.

Indian software service companies use a unique mix of ???onsite??? workers located at clients?? overseas locations with India-based ???offshore??? workers. The two groups communicate over high-speed telecoms.

Indian workers are facing more visa restrictions, especially in the US which has a 911 ???hangover???. An express program that helped firms to get workers?? visas without physical interviews is being scaled back.

Despite these issues, Indian firms are still hiring. The two leading companies, Infosys and Wipro, employed more than 3,000 new workers each in the first three quarters of the fiscal year, which ended in March.

Following the 911 debacle many Indian workers desire to return home to safer jobs, thus avoiding security checks and ???racial profiling???.

Many see the factors affecting Indian workers as a political issue driven by economics. As the Indian software industry increases its prominence, such problems are like to increase.

The perception in Western nations that jobs are being lost to Indian workers is an issue that will continue to dog the Indian industry.
