Shannan Prefrecture of the Tibet Autonomous Region is located between 9014'E-9422'E and 2708"N-2947"N, at the lower reaches of the Yarlung Zangbo River south of the Kangdese Mountains-called the Nyainqentanglha Mountains on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. It is bounded by the capital city Lhasa to the north, Xigaze to the west, Nyingchi to the east and India and Bhutan to the south. With an area of 73,500 square kilometers, Shannan occupies one-fifteenth of the total area of the Tibet Autonomous Region. With a boundary line of more than 600 kilometers, it has great strategic importance and serves as China's southwestern border area.

Shannan includes 12 counties, four of which are in boarder areas. They are Cona, Lhongzi, Nanggarze and Lhozha. There are 144 township-level towns, five neighborhood committees and 719 village committees. Of the 144 townships, there are 71 agricultural townships, 18 involved animal husbandry, and 57 that combine these two sectors.

Shannan's topography is typical of the southern Tibetan valley area, with a terrian gradually declining from west to east and at an average elevation of about 3,700 meters. The Yarlung Zangbo River, the mother river of Tibetan people, runs 424 kilometers from west to east through the seven counties of Nanggarze, Gonggar, Chahang, Nedong, Sangri, Qusum, Gyacha. In addition, Shannan has 41 rivers that run down high mountains and deep valleys all year round, with the river area of 38,000 square kilometers. There are 88 lakes in the prefecture, including Yamzhog Yumco, Namco, Chigu and Purmo Yumco, which are well known and, like green gemstones, are inlaid in the mountains of Shannan.

Lhasa is home to the Tibetan, Han, and Hui peoples, as well as many other ethnic groups, but the Tibetan ethnic group makes up 87 percent of the total population.

Lhasa has beautiful scenery. The Lhasa River, known as the "merry blue waves," runs through the snow-covered peaks and gullies of the Nyainqentanglha Mountains, extending 315 km. The river empties into the Yarlung Zangbo River at Quxu, forming a scenic wonder that features blue and white water waves.

The ancient city of Lhasa stands by the Lhasa River. Inside the city towers the Potala Palace. The city features a combination of traditional and modern things, including prayer wheels and computers.

Located at the bottom of a small basin surrounded by mountains, Lhasa has an elevation of 3,650 meters and sits at 91'06E and 29'36N, the center of the Tibet Plateau. Blessed with flat land and mild weather, Lhasa is free of frigid winters and unbearably hot summers, having an annual average daily temperature of 8 degrees C (43 degrees F). It enjoys 3,000 hours of sunlight annually, much more than all other cities in this regard, giving the city its title of "sunlit city."

Lhasa enjoys an annual precipitation of 500 mm. It rains mainly in July, August and September. The rainy seasons in the summer and fall are the best seasons of the year, when it rains mostly at night, and is sunny in the daytime.

Golmud is a Mongolian word meaning "a place concentrated with rivers." It is situated in the central-south of the Qaidam Basin on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and occupies an area of 124,500 square kilometers, or half the size of Britain.

Mt. Kunlun and Mt. Tangula traverse the entire region with a large number of snow-capped mountains, glaciers, rivers and lakes. Among the lakes, alkali flats, swamps, oasis and rolling dunes in the flat basin, Chaerhan Lake is the largest saltwater lake in the world, with an area of 5,658 square kilometers, giving Golmud its nickname "Salt Lake City."

Getting to know: Pingyao

Pingyao County is located in central Shanxi Province, 94 kilometers southwest of Taiyuan, the provincial capital. The county's downtown region covers an area of 5.7 sq km and has a population of 54,400. One of China's most well preserved ancient walled cities, also named Pingyao, is located here.

Pingyao has a temperate continental monsoon that is semi-dry with an annual average temperature of 10.2 degrees Celsius and annual precipitation of 480 mm, with rainfall concentrated in the summer.

Initially built during the reign of King Xuan of the Western Zhou Dynasty (827-782 B.C.), the walled city of Pingyao has a history of over 2,700 years. Located on the trade route between Beijing and Xi'an, Pingyao developed into a center of trade where enterprising locals set up the nation's earliest banks, named Piaohao. These institutions were the first in China to use checks, and business peaked in the 19th century, when the city was the undisputed financial center of the Qing government. Shanxi business people (Jin Shang) were quite famous in the Ming and Qing dynasties.

The walled city covers an area of 2.25 sq km. The city wall was expanded for defensive purposes in 1370, when Ming Emperor Hongwu was on the throne. The wall runs 6,162.68 meters (about 4 miles) around the city and stands about 12 meters tall and 3 to 6 meters wide on top. It is made of rammed earth strengthened with a covering of bricks and stones. Outside the city wall there is a moat, 4 meters wide and 4 meters deep. There are 72 watchtowers on top of the city wall and 3,000 external battlements. The city wall, the streets, buildings and shops are all preserved from the Ming and Qing Dynasties.

In 1997 UNESCO decided to include Pingyao on the World Heritage List, the comments reading: the Ancient City of Ping Yao is "an outstanding example of a Han Chinese city of the Ming and Qing Dynasties, retaining all the features of these periods. Pingyao presents a picture of unusual cultural, social, economic, and religious development in Chinese history."

Thirty points of interest lie in and around Pingyao, including its two other "treasures," Zhengguo Temple and Shuanglin Temple (Double Tree Temple), the first treasure being the city wall. Zhengguo Temple, located 12 km northeast of Pingyao, features unique wooden structural architecture, and Shuanglin Temple, located 6 km southwest of Pingyao, is famous for its colorful sculptures. Another attraction is the Pingyao Confucius Temple, first built in the Tang Dynasty and restored in 1163. Rishengchang was established in the early Qing Dynasty, as the forerunner for organizing China's early finance system, handling remittance, money exchange, deposits, loans and other financial business.

General introduction to Yan'an

Situated in northern Shaanxi Province on the Loess Plateau, Yan'an overlooks the middle reaches of the Yellow River, the cradle of Chinese civilization. Yan'an, called 'Yanzhou' in ancient times, has a history stretching back about 1,400 years and has long been the political, economic, cultural, and military center of north Shaanxi. Nowadays it is a city which boasts one district and twelve counties. It is inhabited by a population of 2.15 million, which includes 24 minorities. Holding a prominent place in Chinese military history, Yan'an is an important revolutionary city in China. It was the country's military headquarters during the Chinese Anti-Japanese War (1937-1945) and China's War of Liberation (1945-1949), as well as the former location of the Central Committee of the Chinese Communist Party.

This checkered past means that those who are interested in Chinese modern revolutionary history or those who want to examine the colorful folk customs and culture of the Loess Plateau should make sure that they visit Yan'an. The city has something for everyone to see, including numerous revolutionary, historic, and scenic sites. In addition, the abundant special local products, delicious Yan'an snacks, and various folk art forms of peasant painting, paper-cutting, drum art, and folk songs are also appealing to visitors.

Being of a temperate continental monsoon climate, Yan'an is an ideal place to visit all year round especially in the summer.
