(ISLAMABAD, April 16) -- The Pakistani leg of the 2008 global torch relay concluded successfully after the lighting of the flame cauldron in Islamabad's Jinnah Stadium on April 16.

The sacred flame arrived at the "garden city" in the very early morning hours of Wednesday to begin preparations for the relay as the 10th stop of the worldwide route.

Through the hands of 65 torchbearers, the circular torch relay route concluded with Jahangir Khan, considered by many as the greatest squash player in history, lighting the flame cauldron at the stadium.

The ceremony held at the Sports Complex of the Pakistani capital was attended by President Pervez Musharraf and Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gillani.

According to the schedule, the sacred flame will leave Islamabad late Wednesday night to head towards its next stop an approximate 2 hour flight away -- Indian capital New Delhi.

BANGKOK, April 19 (Xinhua) -- The Olympic torch relay brought abundant cheers and festivity Saturday to Bangkok, the "City of Smile", with a mass of crowds flocking to the street, jamming the flame passing route interspersed with the city's most renowned landmarks and historic sites.

The launching ceremony was staged in the Chinese Gate, which was built in 1999 to celebrate HM the King's 6th Cycle Anniversary at the former Odeon-Fountain site. It was collaboration in Chinatown between the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration and the Thai-Chinese Association.

Thai Deputy Prime Minister Sanan Kajornprasart, chairman of the Olympics Torch Relay Organizing Committee of Thailand, delivered a speech in the setting-off ceremony.

"It is an important event and a first-time opportunity for Thailand to host the torch relay," said Kaiornprasart.

"We have been supporting the Beijing Olympic Games since its bidding seven years ago. It's a great privilege for Thailand and Bangkok to be one of the stop-over for the Olympic flame.

"In spite of the occurrence of attaching politics to sports in a few earlier relays, to us, we would stick to the principle of separating politics from sports, and ensure a memorable relay here."

The highlighting sites en route include Sakchaiyasithi Gate, Democracy Monument, UN office, Chitralada Palace, Ananthasamakom Throne Hall. Historical sights along the route consist of China Town street, Grand Palace and Temple of the Emerald Budda, City Pillar Shrine, Royal Field, Mae Phra Thorani, Maha Jessada Bodin Pavilion Ground, Golden Mount and Chitralada Royal Residence.

All five Olympic champions in Thailand's history were selected to bear the torch, namely Manus Boonjumnong, Somluck Kamsing, Udomporn Polsak, Vijan Polnlid and Pawina Thongsuk.

Three of the five are boxing champions with Manus Boonjumnong in the light welterweight (64kg) in the Athens Olympics, Somluck Kamsing in the featherweight (57kg) in the Atlanta Games and VijanPolnlid in flyweight (51kg) in the Sydney Olympics.

Udomporn Polsak is women's weightlifting gold medalist of 53kg in Athens Games. The last torchbearer Pawina Thongsuk is another weightlifting champion of women's 75kg in Athens. The first torchbearer was Anant Siripasraporn, the Deputy Permanent Secretary of Bangkok Metropolitan Administration.

"I am filled with the scenario of carrying the torch in mind. It's so exciting," said Siripasrapom after finishing his first leg.

"I feel so honored to welcome the Olympic flame here. It's a great event to mark the close relations between the two countries, it's a good opportunity to bring forth the city to the world, it'sa great day for the citizens to cheer up," added Siripasrapom, a Chinese descendant.

Pawina Thongsuk just retired from weightlifting for a knee injury, but the experience of torch relay somewhat makes up for her leaving the Olympic competition. "I suffered injury in my training this year and have to retire from weightlifting, but being a torchbearer is making up for my retiring from the Olympic Games," said Thongsuk.

"Though I can't go to the Beijing Games, but I think my teammates are capable of winning something there."

The community celebration was set up in Equestrian Monument of King Rama V with throngs of people waiting there hours before the arrival of the Olympic flame. The bronze statue of King Rama V in Field Marshal's uniform mounted on a horse was cast in Paris by a French sculptor in 1907 when the king visited Europe, and was shipped to Bangkok in 1908. The statue stands six meters tall from the platform on which the horse stands to the top of the helmet.

A day earlier on Friday, Thailand's crown princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn presided over a welcome party, expressed her aspiration of attending the opening ceremony of Beijing Olympic Games on August 8 on behalf of the King Bhumibol Adulyadej. The princess is well known for her keen interest in Chinese culture and has been to China for dozens of times.

Bangkok is the capital and primary city of Thailand, a country of Buddhism prevailing. It is located on both sides of the Chao Phraya River with a huge population of over 10 millions.

Wrapping up the 10km relay in Bangkok, the Olympic flame is heading for the next journey in Kuala Lumpur, the capital of Malaysia

Chinese Ambassador to Malaysia Cheng Yonghua kindles the Olympic torch for the last torchbearer during the torch relay in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, April 21, 2008. Kuala Lumpur is the 13th stop of the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games torch relay.

(KUALA LUMPUR, April 21) -- The Kuala Lumpur leg of the 2008 Olympic torch relay concluded successfully on Monday when the last torchbearer, Malaysia's ninth king and sultan of Perak, Azlan Shah, lit the waiting flame cauldron at about 6:00 p.m. local time (1000 GMT).

From the Malaysian capital's Dataran Merdeka (Independence Square) , the sacred flame made its way through important historic and tourists sites around the city, finally stopping at the Petronas Twin Towers about four hours later.

Minutes before the clock struck 5:00, the clouds above Kuala Lumpur opened up and let down sheets of rain. This, however, did not seriously affect the relay, and fans stayed out, risking getting soaked, to offer their support for the Beijing Games.

Speeches given at the closing ceremony included thanks to BOCOG for putting Kuala Lumpur on the torch relay map, and wishes for a successful Beijing Games.

Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) president Tunku Tan Sri Imran Tuanku Ja'afar spoke about the honor his country feels of being selected as a stop on the global route. Malaysians will remember this day forever, he pronounced. The OCM president was the first torchbearer on Malaysia's route.

Jiang Xiaoyu, BOCOG vice-president, brought up the long, cooperative friendship China and Malaysia have developed through the years. The sacred flame's "Journey of Harmony" represents worldwide peace, the representative continued, emphasizing that the Beijing torch relay stop in Malaysia will serve to strengthen ties between the two countries.

This is the second time since 1964 that Malaysia has hosted a torch relay.

At 11:00 p.m., the sacred flame will take off on its chartered plane to its next stop, Jakarta, the capital of Indonesia.

Coates highlighted the deepening friendship between Australia and China and said that the torch relay in the capital will continue to strengthen mutual cooperation and communication between the two nations.

He said that the Canberra leg is a good opportunity to display the passion of the Australian people and that the sacred flame will spread the Olympic spirit and enhance people's understanding on the Olympic Movement and Olympic spirit.

Australian Capital Territory Chief Minister Jon Stanhope shared Coates sentiments, saying that the Australian people are excited about the torch relay, and that Canberra, specifically, is grateful for the opportunity to present itself to the Chinese people.

Jiang Xiaoyu, Executive Vice-President of the Beijing Organizing Committee of the Olympic Games, handed the Olympic torch to the first torchbearer, Tania Major, an aboriginal who was named Young Australian of the Year 2007. Ian Thorpe, Australia's retired Olympic champion, will be the last torchbearer in this leg of the race.

It is expected that more than 20,000 overseas Chinese will witness the historic torch relay in Canberra.

Before the torch relay began, spectators had already enjoyed the pre-dawn fireworks, hot balloon inflation and performances by Chinese and Australian artists, among whom are Descendance Indigenous Dance Theatre and famous folk music singer Lee Kernaghan, who was awarded the Australian of the Year in 2008.

Eighty torch runners will run through the 16-km routes which started from the Reconciliation Place in front of the old parliament house near Lake Burley Griffin and will end at the Stage 88 in the Commonwealth Park, on the other side of the lake.

Thousands of spectators cheered when Tania Major took her first step to start the long-awaited torch relay. Along the relay route, many spectators, most of them with Chinese origin, were waiting for hours to see the sacred flames of the Olympic Games which has already toured 14 legs outside China.

HO CHI MINH CITY, April 29 (Xinhua) -- Smiles, cheers, screams, applauses everywhere. The Olympic flame underwent a night of great passion in the Ho Chi Minh City of Vietnam on Tuesday.

Hundreds of thousands of people flocked into the street, waiting and enjoying the passing of Olympic flame. The Olympic "five-ring" flags, Vietnam flags and Chinese flags laid all over the sidewalk along the route

Nguyen Thi Thu Ha (R), vice mayor of Ho Chi Minh City, receives the torch from Chinese Ambassador to Vietnam Hu Qianwen (L), before running the opening leg of the torch relay in HO Chi Minh City, Vietnam, April 29, 2008.

Long queues of motorbikes squeezed the intersections longing for a glimpse of the torch relay. Waiters of restaurants suspended work to greet the relay. Thousands of motorists chased the relay to make photos and videos. It's the exact time to celebrate for the whole city. It seems no one would afford to miss the visit of Olympic flame.

The relay, the first hosted by Vietnam, traveled 13 kilometers (8 miles) from the opera house in the city center to the Seventh Military Zone Sports Stadium. Sixty torchbearers from all walks of life participated in the relay.

Nguyen Thi Thu Ha, the deputy mayor of Ho Chi Minh city, was the first torchbearer who received the torch from Hu Qianwen, Chinese ambassador to Vietnam, and showcased the flame to the crowd.

"Olympic Games is the most significant sports pageantry in the world. As a torchbearer in Ho Chi Minh city, it's evidently a great honor. But I also feel great responsibility to organize the event well until the latest moment," said Nguyen Thi Thu Ha, who is in charge of the organization.

"I hope we can take the advantage of the relay to demonstrate the love of sports in Vietnam, to show our friendship and hospitality. I also hope the arrival of Olympic flame can stimulate the Vietnamese team to turn out good results in the Beijing Games."

Nguyen Thi Thu Ha explained the relay itinerary and schedule. "In line with the overload of traffic in Ho Chi Minh City, we have to ponder a route ensuring a smooth progress of torch and minimizing the affection on the residents' life. The time from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. just shuns the traffic jam," she said.

Red flags, banners and signs welcoming the torch hung from lampposts along several avenues of the city. It's totally permeated for the city to have a day special and ardency.

The celebration ceremony was staged in the Military Stadium, which is not big enough to seat the large pack of enthusiastic spectators. A huge crowd gathered outside the Stadium until the finish of celebration.

The vice president of BOCOG Li Binghua delivered sincere thanks for the support and ebullience from the local residents and overseas Chinese.

"I would like to extend my sincere thanks to the Vietnam people for their active support to the relay. And also the same thanks to the overseas Chinese living and studying here for their attention to the relay," said Li.

"The Olympic torch relay, with the best wishes from China, bridges the gap between different cultures and races, connecting friendships and cooperation."

Vietnam Olympic Committee president Nguyen Danh Thai carried the last torch and lighted the cauldron in the Stadium.

Ho Chi Minh City is the largest city in Vietnam and is located near the Mekong Delta. The city center is situated on the banks of the Saigon River, 60 kilometers from the South China Sea and 1,760kilometers south of Hanoi, the capital of Vietnam.

The metropolitan area, which consists of Ho Chi Minh City and surrounding towns, has more than 9 million people, making it the largest metropolitan area in Vietnam

Vietnam is the last international leg of the relay before the flame goes to Hong Kong on Wednesday.
